This monthly conflict report is designed to update stakeholders on conflict early warning incidents as identified by CIEPD Conflict Watch Centre (CWC) across the 9 States in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The approach of the CWC is focused on predicting, tracking, monitoring and reporting on situations, events and actors (individual, group and institutions) with the capacity to cause violence. The CWC conflict early warning information is collected mainly through community trained incidents reporters and as well as social media sources.

 

Summary of Reported Incidents 

According to CWC data (see Figure 1), a total of 72 conflict early warning incidents were reported in May 2020 across the 9 States in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The highest number of reported incidents in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in May 2020 were in Rivers State with 17 reports, followed by Delta state with 16 and Cross river state with 12 reports during the month on conflict incidents.

This monthly conflict report is designed to update stakeholders on conflict early warning incidents as identified by CIEPD Conflict Watch Centre (CWC) across the 9 States in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. Summary of Reported Incidents 

According to CWC data (see Figure 1), a total of 36 conflict early warning incidents were reported in April 2020 across the 9 States in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The highest number of reported incidents in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in April 2020 were in Delta State with 11 reports, followed by Rivers state and Abia state with 5 reports during the month on conflict incidents.

The highest number of reported incidents in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria in March 2020 were in Imo state with 7 reports, followed by Delta state with 5 reports. Cross River and Rivers State had 4 reports during the month on conflict incidents.

Akwa Ibom State had no reports during the month on conflict incidents.

Akwa Ibom State had the least number of reports during the month with 1 reported conflict incidents.

The approach of the CWC is tuned towards predicting, tracking, monitoring and reporting on situations, events and actors (individual, group and institutional) with the capacity to cause violence. It uses community/location indicators.   It is built on conflict preventive measures more than mitigating.  Sources of information are mostly from community trained trackers while a high number was gotten from media. Incidences reported are verified and analyzed before the intervention.
